Singapore F1 Night Race = Beijing Olympics ?

4 October 2008

It may have been one week passed already since the F1 Drivers descended on our shores and raced on our first ever night race , but the atmosphere has not yet died down yet . The media is still constantly highlighting the Event and thus the Event is still very much the talk of the town among the locals here .

Well , I may not exactly be a F1 Fan , but watching an F1 Race for the first time , ( watching it just because it's us hosting the Grand Event for the very first time and also for the fact that , as Singaporeans , we have to support our nation's efforts ) , I must say that I was indeed very proud and kind of touched as well as emotional - the moment I saw the beautiful city skyline and hearing our National Anthem being sung .

The thought of this LIVE images being beamed LIVE on television , not just in Singapore only but the fact that it is also being shown LIVE stimulanteously to many countries across the World just makes me feel very proud as a Singaporean ! It just goes to show that we although as a small nation , can stand up when it matters most and are able to deliver the BIGGEST when called upon to do so !

We are therefore able to rise to the occasion and have successfully staged the F1 Race flawlessly , earning great reviews and comments from many international media reporters , commentors , analysis and even from the Drivers themselves !

Though there are clearly still rooms for improvement to make it a better Race for next year and for the many races to come in this annual Event on our racing track , but what we can't deny is the fact that we have taken a very successful first step ! As a famous Chinese saying goes : ( loosely translated) " A Good Start Signify Half a Battle Won " ...

Yes , indeed ! Singaporeans can indeed hold their heads high up and feel proud that the inaugural night race has put us on the sporting World map and there will be many more of such instances to come ! Next up of course is : The inaugural Youth Olympics in August 2010 , which we will play hosts to many promising and talented young athletics and sports enthusiasts from round the World ....

The iconic & beautiful scenes seen from the Singapore F1 Race last Sunday , really reminds me of the Beijing Olympics back in August . It has an uncanny link to it that will bring people to somehow in one way or another to just think of the Beijing Olympics too ! And I dare say : With the Singapore F1 Race being able to create such a massive impact among the many locals here and as well as to the many F1 fans all round the World IS therefore our very own version of the Beijing Olympics !

We may not be able to host a normal Olympics nor have that many opportunities to host BIG International tournaments like the Soccer World Cup , but we can certainly host and successfully put up a good show on an international stage like the F1 Race !

* What's your views on the Singapore's first - ever F1 Night Race ? Share with us & Tell us how u want it to see it improved next year ... *

* Relieve All The Drama & Excitement once again in The Singapore F1 Night Race ! Encore Telecast Tomorrow ( Sunday , 5 October 2008 ) at 4pm onwards on Mediacorp Channel 5 ! *

Indonesians Sports Fans Delighted With LIVE Beijing Olympics Coverage !

18 July 2008

Good news for Indonesian sports fans ! After missing out on the LIVE Coverage of Badminton player Taufik Hidayat's gold medal exploits at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, Indonesians will be able to watch the Beijing Olympics next month live and for free too after state-owned TVRI acquired the broadcast rights.

"Yes, we will air the Games," TVRI spokesperson Meggy Theresia Rares told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

"Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)," Meggy said, referring to the organization in charge of the Games broadcast in 28 Asian countries.

She declined to say how much TVRI had paid for the rights or to provide any other details, promising more information would be forthcoming after the agreement was signed.

ABU director for sports John Barton sent a text message to the Post confirming TVRI had acquired the rights.

According to Barton, each broadcaster with rights to the Games will enjoy privileges, including "programming, space at the International Broadcast Center and so on", during the world's top sporting event.

Before TVRI stepped in, it appeared Indonesia would once again go without Olympic coverage because none of the privately owned stations was interested in paying the pricey broadcast rights.

Privately owned RCTI was the last Indonesian broadcaster to provide free coverage of the Games, during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 2004, only a few subscribers to pay-TV Kabelvision were able to enjoy the quadrennial event.

Earlier, Indonesia Olympic Council official Rosihan Arsyad said the broadcast rights were valued at US$1.5 million. This price was reportedly later cut to $1.25 million.

Indonesia's Olympians welcomed Monday's news.

"It's great. Hopefully, the entire nation can watch and therefore boost our morale during the Games," said shuttler Markis Kido, who paired with Hendra Setiawan in the men's doubles to win last year's World Championships in Kuala Lumpur.

Another Olympian, sprinter Suryo Agung Wibowo, said he was happy his family would be able to watch him compete.

"My family along with all Indonesian people will be able to watch our hard work," said the winner in the men's 100 and 200 meters at the Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, last year.

"The public will also get a different view of the news, besides that in the newspapers," he said.

Indonesia will dispatch 24 athletes to Beijing, where they will compete in seven sports, including badminton, weightlifting, swimming and track and field.
